Organic Chickens: Pay 300% More, Get 300% More Salmonella
The January 2007 issue of Consumer Reports finds that organic chickens are the dirtiest, most dangerous consumer option available – with roughly 300 percent more potentially deadly Salmonella contamination than the top 4 regular chicken brands.Testing by Consumer Reports found organic birds, on average, harbored three times more Salmonella (27%) as major non-organic chicken brands (8%). The magazine also tested birds for the more widespread but less deadly bacteria Campylobacter, finding it just as often on organic birds as non-organic (75-90%).Combined, the testing of over 500 whole broilers purchased at supermarkets and natural food stores shows that consumers are only getting more illness risk for the $2-4 organic price premium.
